This volume deals with the Sarvastivada school of Buddhism, the major philosophical school of Hinayana. First a general outline is given of the school's origin in the (Indian) Buddhist synods. Part one ends with a general survey of Sarvastivada literature. In the actual corpus the philosophical texts of Sarvastivada are treated in detail. The organization of the work follows the geographical spread of Sarvastivada. In these parts special emphasis is laid on the Central Asian history of the school, as well as on how the school eventually reached China (Abhidharma and Kosa Schools).

Most Zen masters refuse to discuss the discipline or explain it. Hubert Benoit takes the opposite, and for intellectually-inclined Westerners, the more accessible path, and discusses Zen in exhaustive detail in terms of psychology and philosophy--especially phenomenology and existentialism. Benoit writes at an extremely high level of abstraction (something quite alien to traditional Zen, which deals mainly in parables) but any experienced meditator will concur that practically every word Benoit writes rings with utter truth and fidelity to the workings of consciousness.

The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lamrim chen mo) is one of the brightest jewels in the world's treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa (1357-1419), completed this masterpiece in 1402 and it soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Jinakalamali is intended to be a study of the epochs of Buddhism as representing its origin in India and the spread to Ceylon and thence to the establishment of the Singhalese form of Buddhism in South-East Asia. It falls in the same category of literature as the Pali Chronicles of Ceylon and Thailand.

Master Sheng-yen, author of Subtle Wisdom and the head of monasteries in both Taiwan and the United States, has written another inspiring introduction to the Chan Buddhist tradition of China, more familiar to Americans as Zen, its incarnation in Japan. The Legend of Queen Cama (Camadevivamsa), an early fifteenth-century Pali chronicle written by Mahathera Bodhiramsi, recounts the story of the founding of the kingdom of Haripunjaya in the Chiang Mai valley of Northern Thailand in the seventh century C.E. Similar to other Theravada Pali chronicles, the legend integrates religious and political stories, namely, Queen Cama's founding of a dynastic lineage and the fortunes of Buddhism within it.
